Home Schooling – Advantages and Social Concerns

Home Schooling – Advantages and Social Concerns

One of the areas of deep concern when it comes to homeschooling is social skills. Many people who serve as critics believe that it is detrimental to one’s growth and development to have a homeschooling environment where social interaction is very limited.

Children will most likely lack the confidence to hold a conversation with other kids when put into school environments where there is fierce competition. The tendency is that there children might show little genuine interest in the topic when conversing with others and might not be able to interact well with people older than them.

Children are more aware of the implications and the reasons why they need to learn when they learn at home. There are more chances that they will ask clever questions and make keen observations. Children start their life by copying what they see and hear from their parents. Hence, home-schooled kids understands the good qualities they see in their parents. Moreover, they are more guided and protected from the bad influences of their friends when they are home-schooled.

Therefore, homeschooled children are more educated and equipped with the tools essential to living their lives in th outside world. It strengthens their self-esteem more when these children will feel that they are not abandoned, embarrassed or ignored contrary to what many children feel in a normal school environment. Homeschooling can give positive result in molding our children as they progress into adulthood.Children turn out to be better balanced and well-rounded as they progress into adulthood.

I’m a homeschooled high schooler, and I always get people asking me if I have friends, or if I have adequate social skills. The truth is, in every state there’s a large network of homeschoolers that get together frequently. I have many, many friends, and like to think I’m socially advanced. =D Not to mention being homeschooled has let me advance two grades beyond my age.

Nice sharing this article, but I prefer “fierce competition” from my peers and socially stable to face the rigors of life. Starting from my childhood years I developed my sense of belonging from my friends, teachers and family while growing up.

Thanks for valuable analysis. If only the kids can also choose, not only the parents.

I come from a family of homeschooling kids (we weren’t forced to, we chose to after having attending public school for a few years). Because we weren’t just in classroom with kids our own age, our social skills actually surpassed those of regular school kids. We could converse with adults as easily as kids our own age.

Great article!!! I can’t understand why this is so much of a worry to people when you tell them you ‘home school’. My kids know how to talk to anyone – from 1 to 101!!! They get to mix in the real world without the peer pressure that can over-run the minds of kids at school. They also have no feeling of ‘us and them’ that can develop with young teens in a school environment.
They went to school for a few years too before we decided to homeschool and we have no regrets at all, especially as we’ve watched their school friends ‘change’ as they’ve grown older.

As a teacher I have opinions on both sides of this matter. Like public schooling, there is also good and bad home schooling. The important thing is that no matter what education a child receives, it needs to be rounded and in the best interests of individual children, rather than one fit suits all. Good article.
